Steve Hill and his wife Gwen Parmelee Hill purchased the first parcel of their Parmelee-Hill Vineyards property in 1994 and planted it with Syrah. In subsequent years, Steve and Gwen purchased adjoining acreage, piecing together what is today the 55 acre Parmelee-Hill Vineyard. Steve had known the property well, as it was once part of the celebrated Durell Ranch, although it had never been planted. The vineyards lie in the Southwest corner of the Sonoma Valley Appellation, a stones throw from the Carneros line. The heart of the property sits on a knoll facing Sonoma Valley to the east and San Pablo Bay to the south. This unique site allows the propagation of Syrah and Zinfandel on southwest and eastern facing slopes and Pinot Noir, Merlot, Chardonnay and Marsanne on the exposed rock and clay flats. Steve and his son Ned continue to farm the adjacent Durell Ranch, which Steve has farmed since planting the first vines in 1979. They have the distinct advantage of living literally in the middle of the vineyard, allowing them to keep an eye on every detail, farming for world-class quality. Parmelee-Hill Vineyards decided in 2001 to begin making a limited amount of high-end syrah under our own label. To make the type of wine we wanted meant sourcing a winemaker of the highest caliber to make it. We found him in Don Van Staaveren of Chateau St. Jean fame. Don has been the sole winemaker for Parmelee-Hill and we work closely with him throughout the year in the field to ensure the best syrah possible goes into the Parmelee-Hill bottle.
